Gammons and Cyberspace

Gammons and Cyberspace

A nice column yesterday by Peter Gammons on the impact of the Internet on the sports as well as the political culture (similar to another column he wrote back in 2006). Two quotes in the column in particular caught my eye (other than the mention of this blog, Baseball Prospectus, and The Hardball Times albeit sadly not in that order) that deserve a few comments.

First, Gammons says:

I make no bones about my strong feelings about the human element. Pure numbers cannot do justice to character and drive and energy. They cannot measure the impact Robin Yount had on teammates when he ran down the first-base line at the same breakneck speed (one scout had nearly 90 Yount games in a six- or seven-year period and claimed he never got Yount faster than 3.9 seconds, or slower than 4.0).

What a wonderful anecdote and one that relates to what I found when looking at the baserunning exploits of Yount in last weeks column. To summarize, Yount was the only player who was a career leader (from 1956-2007 anyway) in multiple of the five baserunning metrics. Overall Yount contributed +54 theoretical runs ranking him 13th in total number of runs. However, he was first in advancing on hits (EqHAR) at +39 runs and first in advancing on fly balls (EqAAR) at +17 runs. He did this despite costing his team 7 runs in stolen bases (EqSBR) and a half run in advancing on passed balls, balks, and wild pitches (EqOAR).

Below youll find Younts career baserunning statistics.

Yount managed to turn in a positive run value in EqHAR in each of his 20 seasons - a rare feat to say the least.

I was also interested by this comment in Gammons piece.

Bill James is trying to define clutch, what made George Brett so different, or sets David Ortiz, when healthy, apart in swagger and presence. You can present me with 4,765 pages of anti-Derek Jeter material; it wont work, I watch him too much.

Although he mentions in the column that he was reading The Hardball Times apparently he didnt let Tom Tangos excellent piece titled "With or Without Derek Jeter" sink in. In that article Tom uses Retrosheet data to demonstrate without a doubt (at least to me) that Jeter is among the worst fielding shortstops of his generation by showing that when Jeter is on the field, regardless of the other context which Tom does a great job of neutralizing, fewer batted balls are turned into outs. Period. And one would think that should be the bottom line when evaluating defense.

In tomorrows Schrodingers Bat at Baseball Prospectus I go one more round with the fielding system dubbed Simple Fielding Runs (SFR) that I developed for use with Retrosheet style play by play data. In the article I compare SFR to UZR (Ultimate Zone Rating) as well as John Dewans Plus/Minus system. Not coincidentally both Plus/Minus and SFR rate Derek Jeter as the worst shortstop in baseball from 2005 through 2007 and of course UZR is no fan either. For my part, here are Jeters SFR numbers since 2002 (ExR is expected runners, Rn is actual runners, and Balls are the number of balls allocated to Jeters area of responsibility).

Year Balls ExR Rn Diff SFR
2002 461 14 10 4 3
2003 479 119 139 -20 -15
2004 637 154 151 3 2
2005 721 183 195 -13 -9
2006 625 163 174 -11 -8
2007 615 168 194 -26 -20
3538 800 863 -64 -47

So over the course of six seasons Jeter is worth -47 runs by handling 64 fewer balls than would have been expected.

What I find interesting about Gammons comment (and his take on Jeter is of course not a rare one and so Im not just picking on Gammons) is the almost absolute faith in observation over other evidence when the evidence from every analytical tool available concurs as to the quality of Jeters defense. Perhaps people are simply wired differently with some inherently more skeptical of what they see (or think they see) and therefore more willing to let other kinds of input shape their opinions. Ill admit its kind of a mystery to me.

FROZEN Elsa and Her Ice Palace

FROZEN Elsa and Her Ice Palace

I have been holding off on writing a post about working on this film for some time now - mainly because I havent been able to find the words to do it justice. I will be grateful for this experience for the rest of my life. The schedule was really tough, but in some ways that made those of us who were working on the film love it (and each other ) even more. It is crazy to think that six months ago, I could (and did) belt "Let it Go" in my car and nobody else knew what the heck I was talking about. Now everybody and their brother is belting it in their car, and I am watching their videos on Youtube. Amazing.

I was so lucky to be able to touch many different aspects of the film. This one, though - she is very near and dear to my heart. The more Elsas character evolved, the more I felt like I was looking in a mirror. While I can (and probably will) go into more detail about the eerie similarities between the lives of the sisters of Arendelle and the Lee sisters, the thing that really hit home for me immediately was this: Elsa is an artist. She expresses herself through creation.

Well, hey! I know that girl.

This characteristic presented an interesting problem. Not only did we need to design Elsa and the world around her, but we needed to design what she would design. Just like her character, this visual language evolved over time, eventually settling on a lyrical rosemaling-inspired treatment for her magic and a sharp-yet-delicate snowflake-inspired treatment for her final creations. I had the great pleasure of working on the interior of the Ice Palace, where a few of these principles went into play.

These are a few of the pieces I did while working on the palace - This first one was done before we figured out the rules of Elsas design language. It is ethereal for sure, but not quite right for her.

The rest of these pieces actually reflect the final design. The snowflake was the key to this world: once we started to base the design around her snowflake (specifically the one on the floor) , the palace was able to grow like snow/ice crystals around her.

All images are property of Walt Disney Animation Studios.

I will do a few more Frozen posts over the next couple of weeks to cover different aspects of the film. In the meantime, I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

Flowers and Crochet

Flowers and Crochet

I am sharing two of my favourite things here today......as it says in the title, flowers and crochet :).....but first i must say a huge thank you to everyone who has entered my springtime giveaway on my previous post (open till march 31 if you would still like to put your name in the draw)...............i have so enjoyed reading your lovely comments, and finding some new bloggers to visit too........my pastel ripple blanket is finished and has been photographed........
.............and i have been loving having jugs of spring flowers in my studio and sewing room while i work this week ...............
..............the weather has been sunny, rainy, bright, but most of all chilly with a mean east wind.....
...........i finished off this ripple by sewing on a bobble trim, like i did with the bright ripple stripe i made last spring, but this time i used white bobbles which blend in with the last white stripes.......
............i have been working on my secret projects.......(all magazine commissions which will pop up eventually here)..........some of the projects involve paper crafts and scrapbook techniques which i so love to play with sometimes............my desk is covered with crafts materials and ready for a big tidy up now......................
..............here is the pastel ripple hanging on the potting shed door..............and some of my chalks...
...............i notice i seem to have used a lot of the pink one :)................
............... sweet pink hyacinths from the garden......i plant the potted hyacinths and other bulbs outside after they flower in the house each year and now have quite a collection outdoors each spring.......below are pink primula from outside daisys pre-school.............and some soft new yarn....
.................and a new persephone book..............i am not sure yet what i will make with this gorgeous new yarn, at the moment i am just enjoying having it there looking delicious.............
...............the little crate is handy to put a project in and pile up the yarn in too......i am always moving my crafty stuff about depending on where i want to work on it and also in an effort not to take over the whole house with it ;)..............
..............i keep sewing things on a tray (which is often in my photographs) and that is easy to lift onto a higher table away from small childrens hands.......scissors and pins and needles are always in use around here........
................one of my favourite spring flowers is the bellis daisy..............
.............i love to mix the garden flowers together with pretty china.....
..............and as this post has so many flowers, i had to have at least one blossom-against-blue sky shot, and here it is..............blissful cherry blossom on some small trees in the old village churchyard....if you stand right underneath the sky looks full of flowers.................thank you for visiting me here in my little blog space, lovely readers, and for your sweet comments........i wish you a happy sunny week with flowers and crafts to enjoy wherever you may be.........back soon xxxxxxxx

Fruits and Veggies Health Pack!

Fruits and Veggies Health Pack!

Towards the end of the year, after we have covered everything I can possibly think of in Social Studies and Science, I like to go over Health with my little ones.  There is a Health Curriculum Book that I made copies of years ago.  I tried to make it more kid friendly and to my little ones style and liking.  So I created this sweet packet.  I truly love every single printable in this set.  And after talking with my husband, (phys ed/health teacher), he said we should make more packs later on that are all kid friendly and relatable health packs!  Im excited to show you my Fruits & Veggies Health Pack

I put everything in here that I know my little ones will really enjoy doing wether its for morning work, centers or for homework.  Heres a sneak peak and whats inside…

I made posters on important facts and info on fruits and veggies.  Then I made a poster describing the differences between the two.

(dont mind my effort in trying to be fancy with the polka dot background. I gave up after the first pic as you can see)

I added some cutting and pasting activities.  My students love these kinds of centers!

Students can work on this together or on their own.  I think it would be a great center to just toss in!

I like this activity because it gets the kids reading, writing and thinking about what the right choice is.  There are a few of these in this pack and I think itll be a hit with my little ones.

I made one of these for fruits and veggies. So cute. =)

My favorite?  This sight word game: "Junk Food"
I added a center in this pack.  I know my little ones love sight word games so I created one with a twist. Heres a few shots so you can get the jist.  Comes with a recording sheet so my little ones can jot down their words.

What do you think?

This pack is perfect for teaching your little ones all about fruits, veggies and staying healthy. Its necessary to teach your students that its important to make healthy choices and with this pack you can do just that. This is loaded with printables, centers, fun reads and much more, your students are sure to love. These activities are perfect for centers, morning work, homework or during free time.

Flowers Fabric and Stars

Flowers Fabric and Stars

Flowers are everywhere this week...on my fabrics and in my garden.....some of the garden ones are growing so wildly due to all the rain and sunshine that ive had to cut them back a bit, like the mallow in the basket above.....
..............i finished quite a lot of projects recently which means its time to start some more ;).....i got out lots of delicious fabrics from my stash and began cutting out some speedy machine pieced stars....the fabric above is from the gorgeous strawberry biscuit collection by elea lutz...............
..............and below some of the beautiful flower sugar from lecien.......i do love some flower sugar in my quilts :) ................the cheater prints from both ranges make great centre squares for the stars, i think.......
...............i have been sewing happily, ignoring the rain and cutting and pinning very carefully so my seams nest nicely.......it took me a while to get used to rotary cutting, and machine piecing after a lifetime of english paper piecing but now i love both techniques in different ways......
.................one more fabric shot because it looks so pretty..............
................after id made the small-ish star block below i decided to try making a big one, maybe as a mini quilt for the sewing room wall.............
..................it took a while to work out the proportions but here is a peek at the larger one......
.............and then i needed to order some more fabric to make some more because i really liked the big version............more of this summer stars quilt coming soon............below is the birthday weekend garden, with bunting hung up by my elder daughter :).........it was my youngest daughters birthday the same weekend and we often celebrate it together which is lovely......and the sun shone for us that day too......
...............below is miss daisy and miss molly dog, always together as they are the best of friends....
...............some peaceful garden moments with a quilt and a crochet pillow in a flowery spot.....
...........a nice cup of tea and some time to sit and dream...........
.............a new garden crate filled with quilty produce this time.......
...................and those pretty mallow flowers again......love this plant and its abundance of blooms...........
..............thank you dear readers for all your kind birthday wishes on my last post, and i am glad you liked seeing the pictures of my studio.........i will show some pictures of my sewing room soon, too....when the fabric is tidied up a bit ;)........wishing you a very happy crafty week with plenty of flowers and sunshine to enjoy.............back soon xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
