For the Sheer Hell of It
For the Sheer Hell of It
When I mentioned the ship Lurline after writing about the edging "Lurline" I did not expect to get multiple, thrilling comments from readers who had sailed on the ship; or had seen the ship in its prime, or who had relations whod sailed on the ship; or who actually knew a Lurline who was directly descended from the Lurline who had given her name to the ship. And, fine, yes, I will be learning to play the goopy sweet song about finding love on the Lurline on my ukulele. I eat that sort of thing up with a spoon, you know I do.
Here, just for kicks, is another nineteenth century edging from Weldons Practical Knitter (Fourteenth Series). Its called "Cyprus."
Not so unusual as "Lurline," but handsome and easily memorized. Like "Lurline," this edge is worked in garter stitch so it doesnt curl. Its heading for not one, but two upcoming projects I am otherwise not supposed to talk about right now.

The yarn, by the way, is Zitron Lifestyle from Skacel. I have fallen deeply in love with it. Its wool, its superwash, its lightweight, and it has so much spring that if Id been in charge of branding at the Zitron mill I would have called it BOING. An absolute joy to handle.
Today is a bit overscheduled, so I must dash, but if you want more of me I just did an interview for the gorgeous people at Squam Art Workshops. Oh my yes, I will teaching at Squam again this year. I guess they took me seriously when I said if they didnt invite me back I was going to sneak in anyway, sleep in a tree, and eat moss.

Budapest is just simply amazing. Every time we visit, we see different places, meet different people. We went to Budapest for the Thomas Sabo event, you can read more about it here, and also to meet a wonderful designer. You will read about that later on!
Anyway, I have two little stories to tell you, both of them happened to me on this particular day. One of them has to do with this beautiful ring that Kinga bought in wonderLAB. Usually I dont wear any rings because I wash my hands so many times a day (med student problems), and I am afraid I will lose my ring. Well, that just happened in Budapest. I left this unique ring in the bathroom of a pretty place, and only realised it when I entered another bathroom and wanted to take off the ring before washing my hands. I freaked out. I knew Kinga would kill me, because its not just one of those H&M rings that you can buy anywhere. We rushed back to the place where I left my ring, went in the bathroom and ... its gone. I thought this was the moment Kinga would kill me, so I thought I will just ask the bartender if they have found a golden ring. And they did find it and I was the happiest person ever!!! So I will stick to my old habit of NOT wearing any rings. Too much drama!!
The other story is about these pretty sandals. I showed you guys on Instagram (you can follow me @saci_cfc) and you totally loved it! I bought them in exam period and I was anxiously waiting to wear them. They seemed so comfortable and they are really comfortable ... but not for a whole day of running around in a huge city. Its one of those 3-4 hours shoes, that you just put on for an event, or you wear them in the car and so on. At least for me. Why? Well because the middle strap, yep that golden sun of a b*tch, has totally ruined my feet for the next few days. I had a line full of blisters on both feet. In the end I gave up, went to the nearest Bershka and bought a pair of black sandals. Moral of the story? If you have a full day of running around in a huge city, wear your old comfy sandals. But who am I kidding? Fashionistas would do anything for the sake of fashion. Or there is a saying in Hungarian: "you have to suffer to be beautiful".
Have a wonderful week!
xoxo,
Saci

Fluffernutter Blondies for the Secret Recipe Club
Fluffernutter Blondies for the Secret Recipe Club
I have a delightful treat of a recipe for you today! Yum, yum, YUM....Fluffernutter Blondies. I found this recipe on the blog, The Spiffy Cookie that was assigned to me this month through the Secret Recipe Club. Definitely a recipe to make for those that you love, that you adore, that you know REAL well and even those that you may just know by name. You will make ALL of them happy with these blondies (except those that are allergic to peanut butter as there is indeed PB in them as predicted by the name of these treats). When you bite into one of these bars you will take a double take to the treat in your hand as you will think you just took a bite of a fluffernutter sandwich. The taste of peanut butter and fluff melts in your mouth as you enjoy
The owner of The Spiffy Cookie, Erin is just adorable! She is a graduate student that just adores to cook and bake - hmmm, sounds like someone else I know! Erin has worked hard on filling her blog with lots and lots of recipes. Definitely take a moment to hop over to blog to check out her recipes. Also be sure to keep your eyes open for the gorgeous pottery in some of her pictures as SHE is one that has made them! Erin is an all around talented
gal. :-)
Fluffernutter Blondies
(recipe from The Spiffy Cookie)
Ingredients:
8 Tbsp unsalted butter, softened + 2 Tbsp for melting
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
pinch of salt
1 cup flour
1/4 + 1/3 cup peanut butter, divided
1/2 cup marshmallow creme (otherwise known as, fluff)
1/4 cup white chocolate chips
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease an 8x8 pan (I used a 9x9 pan with success) - set pan aside.
2. Cream together 8 Tbsp butter, white and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add in eggs and vanilla extract - mix to combine. Add in salt and flour - again mix until incorporated. Next add in 1/4 cup peanut butter.
3. Pour batter into prepared pan.
4. In a small sauce pan add in the remaining 2 Tbsp of butter, 1/3 cup peanut butter and marshmallow creme. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly as it melts until it is smooth. Drizzle this lovely mixture over the batter in the prepared pan.
5. With a knife swirl the peanut butter/fluff melted mixture into the blondie batter. Lastly, sprinkle the white chocolate chips over the top.
Pop pan into oven and bake for 20-25 minutes (23 minutes was just right for my blondies). Cool completely before cutting into bars.
Yum! Enjoy!
Happy Fluffernutter Blondies Baking!

Free Maven Repository Hosting for Open Source projects by Sonatype
Free Maven Repository Hosting for Open Source projects by Sonatype
Im very excited to see Sonatype support maven repositories for Open Source projects that use maven. In all honesty, they didnt have to do this. Unfortunately, the java.net repo was harming the maven reputation. Ive had direct experience using the java.net maven repo and can say it was an unpleasant experience. When we open sourced our 4 JBI (Java Business Integration) Components their home existed on java.net and we used the their maven repo. It was difficult to upload anything and it seemed to be constantly down.
Before this announcement, open source java projects using maven didnt really have an option as to where they could publish their artifacts. To my knowledge neither Google Code or Sourceforge offered this capability. Apache and Codehaus did and obviously you still have the Maven Central (http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/), but I never went through the process of what it took to use them. Now it doesnt matter where your project is hosted. Hopefully the next thing to come is free Continuous Integration services in the cloud using Hudson. I think this is the next step for project hosting sites like Google Code and github.
Providing free maven repos I think has a lot of benefits and not just for maven users. For example, this should benefit all dependency management tools that are built on top of maven repos. Im not 100% sure tools like Ivy, Grape, Gradle, and Buildr use maven repos, but my guess is they do and this will benefit those users. Another benefit is being able to standardize on maven repositories, hopefully preventing users from searching where they can find your artifacts. Ive wasted a lot of time in the past trying to find valid repositories where I could find artifacts for a project I was wanting to use.
Im also very impressed with the features Sonatype is providing. Not only will they support release artifacts but SNAPSHOTs as well which could consume a lot of space. Youll also be able to easily sync with Central. Finally, they will support a staging repo in order to test things out before officially releasing.
So go sign up and thanks Sonatype. Also, read this post to learn how to release your project using the maven release plugin.

This Kryptonite has a name: Seniority.
So much for pilots joining hands and singing Kumbaya.
The West argued for a “relative seniority” integration, which would keep virtually all pilots—East and West—in their respective airplane, seat and base. This would have the added benefit of minimal costs for the new airline. Federal arbitrator George Nicolau agreed, but placed 517 East pilots on top of the West pilots’ entire seniority list.
That is, the #1 West pilot was now #518. All West pilots lost relative seniority, while all East pilots gained.
By all accounts, USAPA has failed as a union. Obsessed with DOH, it has stonewalled all pilot contract negotiations. Once the top moneymakers, USAirways pilots now languish at the rock bottom of the industry. Moreover, USAPAs every action has favored East pilots over West—blatantly illegal under labor laws. Post-merger, dozens of active West pilots were furloughed while all East furloughs have been recalled. While the last West pilots are only now being recalled from furlough, New Hires on the East have upgraded to Captain.
While not nearly the debacle as AWA/USAirways, the recent mergers at United/Continental, Delta/Northwest and Southwest/AirTran have all experienced similar turbulence. Indeed, American Airlines chewed up and spit out TWA pilots so severely, that it prompted Congress to create the McCaskill-Bonds Amendment.
What stands to happen with the new US/AA merger? If the past is any indicator, youd better buckle your seatbelts. Were in for some serious self-inflicted turbulence.
IF I HAD ONE WISH FOR AVIATION, what would I change? Aviators.
I say again, Tower:

“Why can’t we all just get along?”

The image of the airline pilot is a super one.
Second only to firefighter, airline pilot consistently ranks as the top most respected profession in the world. The stereotype of the stoic, benevolent, grandfatherly problem-solver in the sky is embedded in our psyche. Calm in the face of danger, the airline pilot gets it done. Plane on fire? Cat caught in a tree? Don’t panic! I’m an airline pilot.
But this heroic sky god has a secret weakness as powerful as Superman’s Kryptonite, one that will reduce him to a blubbering, tantrum-throwing 2-year old. Worse, it threatens to transform our benevolent Supergramps into Bizarro Supergramps, a snarling, cannibalistic jackal willing eat his own kind.

This Kryptonite has a name: Seniority.
Seniority is everything to a pilot. It dictates whether he’s a Captain or First Officer, holds a line (schedule) or is on reserve (on call), what equipment he’s on and where he’s based. It tells him whether he has weekends and Christmas off or has to fly redeyes. It dictates whether he even has a job.
____________
This Kryptonite has a name: Seniority
____________
Unlike doctors, lawyers and other professionals, pilots cannot make lateral moves between companies. Why? Because there is no easy measuring stick for saying, “This pilot is ‘better’ than that one, therefore he should be senior.” Either a pilot can fly, or can’t.
As a result, seniority is solely based on date of hire (DOH). The longer a pilot stays—in theory—the better his schedule, pay, and job security. The more people beneath him, the more he is cushioned from furlough (layoff, with recall rights) during a downturn. When a single company is involved, everybody agrees: DOH is the only fair way to determine seniority.
____________
When airlines merge, all hell breaks loose
____________
But when airlines merge, all hell breaks loose.
At first glance, DOH seems like a fair integration for any merger as well. After all, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander, right? Not at all. First of all, no merged list is ever "fair"—one pilot always moves up on the back of another. Secondly, fair is solely in the eye of the beholder. In fact, it turns out, DOH is often so unfair for mergers that a recent act of Congress, the McCaskill-Bonds Amendment (see below)*, seeks to prevent mergers based solely on DOH.
To my knowledge, there has never been an airline merger in history wherein the pilots got together, held hands and sang Kumbaya while hammering out a reasonable, integrated seniority list. Instead, both sides fight beak and claw for the slightest advantage, and will stop at nothing to press advantage. No dirty trick is forbidden.

There’s no better example of this cannibalistic behavior than the 2006 purchase of bankrupt USAirways by America West Airlines. At the time, original USAirways ("East") pilots had as many furloughed (on the street) as America West ("West") had pilots.
During seniority negotiations with ALPA (Airline Pilots Association, their mutual union,) East pilots argued vehemently for DOH. This would “staple” 80% of West pilots beneath the East—even below those that had been laid off. This would force the majority of West pilots onto the street—the very pilots that had saved their jobs!

____________
But that wasnt enough. The East pilots used their superior numbers (about 2 to 1) to force West pilots out of ALPA and into their own, in-house union, “US Airways Pilots Association" (USAPA.) USAPAs primary mandate was to implement a DOH list and ignore the legally binding Nicolau arbitration—even though the Company had already accepted the list.
 |
| "What? Theyre not all stapled below me? RRAAUU!!" |
USAPAs very first act as a "union" was to sue 24 West pilots—accusing them of RICO "mafia" violations—for the "crime" of fighting back. Required by law to pay union dues, these West pilots were forced into the legally bizarre position of suing themselves. The suit was thrown out as frivolous, but for the past six years, more lawsuits have flown back and forth, with both sides fighting to a virtual stalemate.

*Missouri Senators Clare McCaskill and Christopher Bond, alarmed by the treatment of West pilots at the hands of East during the AWA/USAirways acquisition, and concerned about the seniority integration treatment of employees at Trans World Airlines ("TWA") following its purchase by American Airlines and integration of the two airlines operations and workforce, introduced legislation to guarantee labor protective provisions to airline employees with respect to seniority integration for certain covered transactions. For Kris
For Kris
I have thought and thought about this post. I have rewritten it a number of times, which can only say one thing...this is not easy. I found out Sunday night that one of our friends, Kris passed away at the age of 40. She had a debilitating stroke and didnt make it, leaving behind a husband, a 12 year old daughter and a 5 year old son.
Kris daughter was in my sons class and her son and my daughter went to daycare together. My husband actually went to high school with Kris and I remember the day I met her 6 years ago. Standing in line at my kids school she asked me if my husband went to Littleton HS. The first thing that popped into my head was "OH NO I hope this isnt an old girlfriend, how awkward will this be". Instead she said to my relief, we were in the same Choir class together and I remember him goofing off. (yep, thats my DH) I used to see Kris and the kids daily before we moved. My heart it breaking...for her husband and for her kids. They deserve to have her here with them.
A fundraiser has been put together to help with the kids education. While my kids will probably never have a college fund like many other families these days, at least my kids will have me to cheer them on while they work their way through school.
I am donating several items for this fundraiser in November, but thought I would also try to generate some funds over the next 3 weeks from the sales of this "Family Love" printable Subway Art collection. This printable collection is in honor of Kris and her family. Family meant a lot to Kris as she was not only a wife and a mother, she also worked for the last 16 years at an adoption agency helping over 600 couples adopt and complete their own families.
The collection contains a 8" x 10" printable as well as a sheet of 4 qty 3.75" x 5" printables to cut out and place on card fronts, like I have done here.
"Family Love" is now for sale in PS Harveys shop for only $5 (no shipping). You can print this set as many times as you like (for personal use only please). Both a card set and the 8"x 10" print (framed) would be a wonderful gift for the upcoming holidays for both friends and family.
Thanks for hearing me out on this heart heavy post. Life is too short and oh so precious!
Many hugs,
Pam
