For My Son on his 12th Birthday Fail Boldly

For My Son on his 12th Birthday Fail Boldly

Fail boldly

Fail boldly in your endeavors
at least once
so long as it is worthy
and if you are sailing by the siren call of your own
inner guide
for that compass always steers true.
And even if the destination
is not where you intended to land
the journey is what makes you strong
and gives you interesting things to talk about
when you get old.
Fail boldly
and hate it
the taste of it, the smell of it
the hard reality of it
the humiliation and stress and sense of defeat.
Let it sting
let it ache
keep it close to you so you never forget.
Some people spend their lives running
from pain and trying to mask it.
I call them cowards.
Courage is not like you see in the movies
where the good guys win and the bad guys lose
where everything assimilates into
something dignified and sensible at the end.
Courage is much greater than that
because in this mean and petty world,
nothing is ever assured
and often, doing whats right means standing alone
while the rest of the world looks on and sneers.
But nothing silences critics like success.
Nothing shuts the gaping maws of the cackling hordes
like a man who failed boldly and got back on his feet to
win.
So wait
and train and plan and prepare
and when you win
win decisively.

For The Love Of My Marriage

For The Love Of My Marriage

Oh, unspoken expectations.

So since Im home with our little boy (Im sloooowly returning to work), theres been this shift thats occurred in my marriage. Prior to the birth of our son we both worked full-time jobs. Now, Mr. Fix-It works a traditional schedule and Im transitioning toward part-time-odd-hours-but-primarily-a-SAHM. And for the record, staying home and raising children is MORE than a full-time job. For real. I mean, sure, my "boss" took a 4 hour nap yesterday. But I also havent slept on my own schedule since...August? Literally at any given moment Im on call.

I digress...

So, when we both worked outside the home "equally" meal planning (or lack thereof) and housework were joint efforts - 50/50. Now that Im home, groceries, cleaning, laundry, etc are all mine. Im not complaining, per se, just observing. Its an unspoken expectation Ive placed on myself. (And the hubs doesnt seem too upset.)

The real point of this post is about meal planning, though. I dont care about dinner. Weird? Maybe. By the end of the day, I would be happy to eat a bowl of cereal, some strawberries, and a few bites of cottage cheese. In fact, thats what I ate most nights when I was doing the single girl studio apartment scene. (I was also at my thinnest then. Just saying.) I really have little interest in cooking a whole meal that disappears in 10 minutes. And then clean up. Ugh.

Mr. Fix-It, on the other hand, is pretty rigid about his meals. I think the idea of skipping a meal gives him the shakes. Cereal for dinner? You may as well offer him cardboard. So, pre-baby, on the average night, at about 6:30 we would both blankly look at each other and wonder what to make for dinner. Mr. Fix-It would be annoyed that I didnt care, and Id be annoyed that "fend for ourselves" wasnt considered a desirable option. It was a frequent source of tension.

Lately Ive started doing this crazy thing. I meal plan. On Sunday I decide what were eating for dinner each night. I make a list of ingredients we need. We grocery shop. I either get dinner started in the late afternoon, or Mr. Fix-It and I cook together once baby-man is asleep.

So, dare I say it? Its actually enjoyable. I no longer feel like a domestic failure and Mr. Fix-It is thrilled that we eat like a normal couple/family. Score one for marital bliss.

Full Disclosure of My Critical Biases and Sexual History and other things that are TMI

Full Disclosure of My Critical Biases and Sexual History and other things that are TMI

I like entertainment more than Art with a capital A. I believe I can recognize art, or at least well written fiction. Those things may not be mutually exclusive. Reading Don Simpsons blog before it went away made me realize that talking about what is and isnt art without defining it will give people massive headaches and make them write-off everything you say. Well, I did that with Don, anyway.

But Ill read 100 Nextwaves, even if Ellis takes to personally insulting me in future issues (and if he reads my manifesto about the book, he may), over a couple of Acme Novelty Libraries or Ganges or whatever. Because Id rather be entertained than read a heartbreaking work of staggering genius. Thats just how I roll. I dont dismiss indie comics fully. I read some of them. Black Hole was my favorite GN of the last year. I dont think their fans are snobs. Well, most of them arent, inherently. Some are totally insufferable pricks I wouldnt piss on if they were on fire, running around in a circle, and yelling "Piss on me, fanboy!" They know who they are. But my bias is toward mainstream comics like Seven Soldiers Frankenstein to most of whats out there, becuase do the indie comics have Frankenstein and the Bride working for an erstatz SHIELD and fighting monsters mutated by "... the Water!"? I dont think so. So fuck off, serious cartoonists and everyone else not published by Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse and Image I guess.

One thing I agree with obfuscating old man Simpson on is that I think a lot of people associated with indie/art comics are pretty bad about expecting people to give a shit about their comics because they are not like mainstream comics. It comes off as kinda petulant, you know? I imagine certain folks stomping their feet and going "We are too art!" and "But were better than the crap you read, stupid!" when describing the latest literary black and white masterpiece.

Sure, indie comics may be good for me, but you know what else people always try to sell me by telling me its good for me? Broccoli. So, indie comics bolsters, find a better way to sell me on your favorite comics than making me think of eating my vegetables. Well, those of you that do that. This is a bigger strawman than a 3,000 foot tall Scarecrow. Im just still kinda angry. It was that kind of week, last week. Just be glad Cronin didnt post a polemic like me and the Gregs. Boy, you do not want to see Cronin mad. I bet its real bad.

Also, Im a virgin. I didnt want to leave the people who read this just for my sexual history hanging. Theres none. Have fun with that one in the comments section!
