From Predator to Reaper

From Predator to Reaper

An improvement on the MQ-1 Predator drone, the MQ-9 Reaper is a UAV that became operational in 2007. Used primarily by the USAF and the CIA, the Reaper has become a very useful and respected battlefield weapon.

Improvements... (Defense-Update)

The Reaper can fly at a higher altitude (50 000 ft.) with higher speeds (260 knots) and for a longer time (14 hours fully loaded). It also has a significantly greater payload than the Predator. In internal stores, the Reaper can carry up to 800 pounds, almost twice the Predator. In external stores, the Reaper can carry up to 3000 pounds! This means that the Reaper is able to carry up to 14 Hellfire missiles, compared to the maximum 2 of the Predator.

Also, the avionics on the MQ-9 is greatly improved.

Armaments...

The Reaper can carry an assortment of different missiles and bombs. Right now, it is able to operate with AGM-114 Hellfire missiles air-to-ground missiles, GBU-12 Pathway II laser-guided bombs, and GBU-38 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) bombs. Testing underway to include the AIM-92 Stinger air-to-air missile into the arsenal.

Size and Costs...

The Reaper is about twice the size of the Predator and is about the same size as the A-10 Thunderbolt (Length: 36 ft. Height: 12.5 ft. Wingspan: 66ft.).

A fully equipped Reaper can cost up US $10.5 million, more than twice the costs of a Predator (about US $4.5 million).

Other Uses...

The Reaper is also used by Homeland Security for border patrol and NASA as an information gathering platform.

 PRESS RELEASE: Julian Assange statement

Thursday August 16, 2012

Assange has hailed the "courageous" act of Ecuador and compared it with the reluctance of Britain and Australia to help him.

In a statement made earlier at the embassy this afternoon, he thanked the staff and went on to pay tribute to Bradley Manning.

"I am grateful to the Ecuadorean people, President Rafael Correa and his government. It was not Britain or my home country, Australia, that stood up to protect me from persecution, but a courageous, independent Latin American nation.

While today is a historic victory, our struggles have just begun. The unprecedented US investigation against WikiLeaks must be stopped.

While today much of the focus will be on the decision of the Ecuadorean government, it is just as important that we remember Bradley Manning has been detained without trial for over 800 days.

The task of protecting WikiLeaks, its staff, its supporters and its alleged sources continues. "

From Obama to Vanity Fair Telling the Wrong Story

From Obama to Vanity Fair Telling the Wrong Story

A recent Vanity Fair article, “ California and Bust,” by Michael Lewis attempts to blame the difficult financial status of many states and municipalities on the costs of public pensions. The following passage is either the result of bad editing or ideological bias: “A prison guard who started his career at the age of 45 could retire after five years with a pension that very nearly equaled his former salary.” As a commenter writes in response to this claim, “What formula is Mr. Lewis using to arrive at this statement? The 3% @50 formula is the top formula used in California and if a Guard made 150,000.00 a year as the base salary used in calculating the pension it would work out as: 150,000 x 3% x 5 years = 22,500.00 annual pension. Please. This is far from the "very nearly equaled his former salary".” Of course this correction is buried in the comments section, and will not be seen by anyone who reads the article in print.

While Lewis’ article appears to be a balanced, neutral expose on our fiscal crisis, it spends virtually no time discussing how pensions were devastated by the crash of the stock market in 2008-09 and how states and local governments have been undermined by the loss of tax revenue related to the collapse of the housing bubble and the crash of the markets. Like so many other stories discussing our economic situation, there is no attempt to explain how illegal mortgages coupled with dangerous financial derivatives resulted in the loss of millions of jobs and trillions of dollars of wealth.

Since the President and other leaders have failed to explain to the American people how our economy has been ravaged by financial speculation, people now believe that the cause of our problems are pensions, benefits, public employees, and unions. Moreover, due to the fact that the President did not make the culprits of our financial woes pay for their misdeeds, he helped to fuel the displacement of blame onto victims of the financial collapse.

Like Obama’s decision not to prosecute the perpetrators of our torture regime, the failure to hold big banks and investors responsible results in a lack of “moral hazard,” which means there is no penalty for destructive behavior. With no one else to blame, the Right produced a populist Tea Party that blamed big government instead of too-big-too fail banks.

Since the President knows that he has to raise $1 billion to run for office, and his Republican adversaries face the same issue, no one wants to step on the toes of guilty investors. In a more rational world, we would see arrests and huge fines, and we would also see the move to tax investment profits at the same rate as earned income, Ina rational world, we would also see a financial transaction tax to slow the pace of our global casino. Yet, instead, we get empty rhetoric and talk about deficit reductions and debt limits.

Let’s hope that the Occupy Wall Street actions turn into an effective national movements that tells the right story and provides the right solutions.

FREE Back to School Printables Set

FREE Back to School Printables Set

Its a GREAT TIME to plan those BACK TO SCHOOL ACTIVITIES! And with the Amandas Parties To Go FREE BACK TO SCHOOL PRINTABLE SET, youll have so much fun while you are at it. This set is huge and packed full of so many adorable printable files. Use the CUPCAKE TOPPERS to make some classroom treats for the first day of school, use the treat bag toppers to dress up your childs school lunch, and be sure to use the 1ST DAY OF SCHOOL prints for your childs 1st day of school photos. I hope you will love this photos from Cris McGrath of Crissys Crafts who styled this adorable Back to School party using the printables.

Cris tells us more about her party styling.....

"Back to School is always an exciting time for my children. We have a "Mom and Me Day" to purchase the school supplies, special first day outfit, new shoes, new lunch bag and backpack.

This year is extra special since my son, Joey, will start Pre-K!! I want to celebrate Joeys milestone by having a Welcome/Back to School Party.

For this party, I tried to keep the snacks simple but creative. For the sweet table, we enjoyed some erasers (Stacker Mallows), pencils (twisters), chalk  (marshmallow confetti), ABC chocolate letters, 123 chocolate numbers, bookworm cupcakes with the cutest cupcake toppers ever from Lynlees Petite Cakes, gum ball apples, apple cake pops and adorable apple sugar cookies from Sugar on Top.

Before they hit the sweet table, the children munched on apple shaped whole wheat ham and cheese sandwiches, bookworm grapes and apple juice.  I set up the goodies on my daughters desk and used my sons vintage school desk to display some of their treats that they took home.

For the backdrop, I used a black bulletin board paper, embellished with a polka dot trimmer and the Back to School banner from the FREE Back to School printable.  As favors, the youngest took home a metal school box from Lunchboxes.com full of goodies. The older children received a lunch sack from Jill Celebrations full of school supplies.

Thanks to Jill Celebrations chalk place mats, the kids played tic-tac-toe while munching on their snacks. What a fun and creative idea!

I also used the FREE Back to School printable to embellish their lunch boxes, snack bags, mason jars, goodie bags, and popcorn container.

One of my favorite DIY projects for this party is the crayon cupcake stand using crayons and toilet paper roll! So easy to make and definitely made the cupcakes stand out!

The kids had a ball playing memory game and back to school bingo, too. A fun way to kick of the school year! "

Four Things To End the Week

Four Things To End the Week

One.

I have a big article about the indie games biz up on Gamasutra. Im quite happy with how it turned out. Enjoy!

Two.

Everyone all justifiably atwitter about how Tim Schafer raised upwards of one million dollars on Kickstarter to make a new adventure game. Its a great proof-of-concept for the whole publicly funded game thing. If Tim Schafer couldnt pull in some coin to make an adventure game, nothing else has a chance.

I think its brilliant, and it ties well into what I said in my Gamasutra article. The secret power of indie devs is to exploit underserved niches. Expect other Kickstarter-funded games in future. I only hope the results match the expectations.

Three.

Heaven forbid that I should be thought to criticize Notch or Minecraft. (I wont even point out that the whole end boss/enchantment/potion/combat system is taking the game in entirely the wrong direction to please exactly the wrong group of people.)

But, about this.

Hey, I wouldnt presume to give them advice. But, after I make my 30 million dollars, Im not going to rely on Anonymous to finish my games for me. Just sayin.

Four.

Every once in a while, I read someones critique of OK Go as a band, focusing on the fact that they basically fine and only have one decent single. (Dont click that link. Youve seen it already.) But that misses the point. They arent a band. Theyre much more interesting than that. Theyre a meme-generation factory, and really good at it.

So here is my legally mandated one link a year to an OK Go video. Yeah, like you have something better to do with three minutes and fifty-four seconds.

Look for my next link to them in roughly fifteen months, when they play some pleasant and non-threatening power pop by shooting kittens out of a cannon into steel drums, or whatever.

Gay Marriage The USA Returns to Glory

Gay Marriage The USA Returns to Glory

Tomorrow the United States Supreme Court will begin hearings to determine the legality of laws that ban gay marriage.  The time has come for all Americans, even those so diametrically opposed to the idea based on their religious convictions, to decide which side they are on.  Are you an American or not?
I, for one, am on the side of our founding fathers.
When the US Constitution was drafted in 1776, heres what it had to say about any kind of marriage, including gay marriage: Nothing.
It said, very simply, very elegantly, that all citizens were entitled to "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."  It goes without saying there were homosexuals in the 1700s, just as there were in the 1600s, 1500s and any other point in time in history.  Its not as if nobody had ever heard of the idea.  Apparently, our storied ancestral countrymen had better things to worry about.
Of course, the real argument isnt whether gay marriage is against American values.  It is about religion.  It is about various churches who cling to the dogma that being gay is a sin and unnatural.  You are all entitled to whatever religious beliefs you choose to embrace (Thats also guaranteed by the Constitution) but what our Founding Fathers fought so adamantly against was that anyones religious beliefs would interfere with the governance of the nation.
In short: You may not agree with it. You may hate it.  You may decry it from the highest mountaintop.  But you cannot stop it and you cannot make it illegal.
Tomorrow, I ask the Supreme Court to return us once more to our great selves.
We are at our worst as a nation when we give in to our fears and prejudices.
We are at our best when we stare those same fears and prejudices directly in the face and say, "I will not be intimidated from doing what is right."
The United States of America is at its best when it leads the way for all of humanity.  When people around the world look once more to the west to see a nation of people who will fight to the death to defend Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
Tomorrow, the Supreme Court has the opportunity to make a stand against the jackals who gnash their teeth so furiously in their efforts to scare us.  Have faith, judges.  History will vindicate those who are stout of heart in the name of freedom.
As a patriot, humanist, and free thinker, I support Gay Marriage and equality for all people.  I encourage you to to do the same.
BERNARD SCHAFFER

Floyd Mayweather v Conor McGregor UFC boss White offers pair 25m each to fight

Floyd Mayweather v Conor McGregor UFC boss White offers pair 25m each to fight

Ultimate Fighting Championship boss Dana White says he will pay Floyd Mayweather and UFC champion Conor McGregor $25m (£20.5m) each to fight.
Mayweather, 39, who retired from boxing in 2015, said on Wednesday talks about a fight had taken place and claimed he had offered the Irishman $15m.
But UFC president White said: "He hasnt made offers to anybody.
"Floyd, heres a real offer - and Im the guy who can make the offer - well pay you $25m and Conor $25m."

Speaking to a Fox radio broadcast, White said that the two would be likely to meet in a boxing ring, not the UFC octagon.
  • "An amateur would beat McGregor blindfolded, never mind Mayweather"
Each fighter would also get a cut of pay-per-view revenue, he said.
"If theyre going to box, Floyd looks at this as an easy boxing match for him," White added. "Conor McGregor is his money fight."
Mayweather, who retired with a perfect 49-0 record, told ESPNs First Take programme that a McGregor bout was the only thing that could tempt him to end his exile from the ring.
McGregor, 28, became the UFCs first dual-division champion in November and has previously challenged Mayweather to a fight under mixed martial arts rules.
His boxing licence has been granted by the California State Athletic Commission, allowing him to box in the US state.
However, he is under contract with the UFC and any potential fight against Mayweather would have to involve a co-promotion or the UFCs blessing.

FOLLOW UP TO WOMEN AND OTHER MONSTERS COMING SOON

Life is Hard, Cupcake
It will beat you senseless and pile on like hungry dogs to keep you from ever getting up.  That aint cynicism, either.  Just true.  Wont be a matter of whats fair or right or expected.  Dont matter how rich you are, pretty you are, or how tough you had it growing up.
Nobody cares.  Nobody will help.

Everybody in this whole world gets pushed.  Tested.  Held to the fire.  They pick up stakes and head home.  Cry to mama.  Its easy to fold when youre staring down the barrel of something scary enough to make your bowels turn to water.  Quitting is easy.

Its what the Fat Cats expect.  The bullies, the landlords, the ass-kissing backstabbing middle-managers at whatever soul-destroying job you have to endure.  They all expect you to work within the system, even though its designed to work against you.  Shut up and lay down.  Take a fall.
These are stories about people who tasted canvas and got up.  People who took a few lumps and came back swinging.  Dont call them underdogs.

Overdogs is the new short-story collection from best-selling author Bernard Schaffer
